GESY Healthcare System Explained

How Cyprus's national health system (GESY/GHS) works — who pays, how much, and what you get.

Key Facts

Employee rate: 2.65% of salary
Employer rate: 2.9% of salary
Self-employed rate: 4% of income
Income cap: €180,000/year (all sources combined)
Passive income: 2.65% (dividends, interest, rental)
No exemptions: Everyone pays GESY

Who Pays GESY?

GESY applies to a far wider income base than social insurance — earned and passive income — and its ceiling of €180,000/year is much higher than the €68,904/year social insurance cap.

Key Difference: GESY vs Social Insurance

Social insurance contributions are capped at €68,904/year. Above that amount, you stop paying social insurance. GESY has a €180,000 annual cap across all income sources combined. For most earners this is a very high ceiling; only those earning above €180,000/year from salary, dividends, interest, and rental combined will hit it. This is an important consideration for high earners.

GESY also applies to passive income (dividends, bank interest, rental income) even if you are non-domiciled and exempt from SDC. There is no exemption from GESY based on domicile status.

What Does GESY Cover?

GP visits
Specialist consultations
Prescription medicines
Hospital care (inpatient)
Emergency care
Maternity care
Dental care (basic)
Lab tests & imaging
